About Hamel Mutual

Our Company

We were originally called Madison County Mutual Fire Insurance Company.  Over the years, we went thru several name changes. In 1989, our final name change took place.  We are now called Hamel Mutual Insurance Company.  Hamel Mutual Insurance Company is still controlled by a group of directors that make all-important decisions regarding our mutual.

Eligible director candidates must hold a policy with our Mutual.  The Board of Directors are nominated and then elected at open annual meetings held the fourth Tuesday of March at 1 p.m.

More about Hamel Mutual

  • As time passed, Hamel Mutual Insurance Company outgrew its first location.  So we bought an office building on West State Street in March of 1949.  In May of 1958, Hamel Mutual began construction on a new office building at the same location.  This is the building we still operate in.

  • As Hamel Mutual Insurance Company grew, so did its coverages.  We now insure against fire and lightning, wind and hail, smoke and water, theft and vandalism, and livestock and farm machinery to name a few.

Hamel Mutual Insurance Company was founded on March 24, 1872.  We began in the home of a farmer who got together with some friends to protect their property against loss by only fire and lightning at a cost as low as $6.24 per year.  They ran the company by forming a Board of Directors.
